Kindergarten: 1
Instructor: Stefanie Liberatore

Welcome to Kindergarten!  We welcome you and your child and look forward to a great year.

This year, teachers will begin by focusing on the following language arts standards: print awareness concepts, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies. These standards will be met by focusing on the following concepts during the third quarter, making predictions, blending and segmenting individual sounds, rhyming words, syllables, alliteration, and distinguishing between letters and words.

The math standards that will be used in the classroom during the year include number sense, numerical operations, estimation, patterns, graphing, and measurement. Concepts that will be taught in the third quarter include counting, identifying numbers, sequencing, addition, subtraction, interpreting pictographs, continuing patterns, identify positional terms and using the concept of size to describe objects.

In Kindergarten, students will participate in centers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These centers include listening, guided reading, math, art, and writing. Kindergarten uses the Houghton Mifflin language arts curriculum and Everyday Math.

During the month of February, students will be learning about space. During the space unit, kindergarten students will learn about our solar system, including the sun, moon, and stars. Classes will read stories about space; learn about galaxies and constellations, and discuss things that appear in space. Students will have the opportunity to write and draw about their own imagined planet, construct a solar system of their own, and build their own constellation.

February is friendship month in Kindergarten and each kindergarten classroom will have a celebration. February is Dental Health month and students will hear from a guest speaker and learn about good dental hygiene. Classes will also spend time during February to discuss Presidents’ Day and talk about past presidents. Kindergarten classes will discuss Groundhog's Day and participate in related activities.

Kindergarten classes will work on the following math concepts during the month of February: creating word problems for addition and subtraction, comparing expressions using spoken words and symbols, recognizing, creating, and extending patterns, and developing and using strategies for addition and subtraction. Kindergarten students will also review the following math concepts: counting forward to 20 and backward from 10, identifying numbers that are one more or one less, and comparing and ordering whole numbers through 20.

During the month of February, classes will work on the following reading concepts: acquiring and using new vocabulary in relevant contexts, decoding words, recognizing and creating new words, and producing letter sounds. Students will also work on distinguishing rhyming words, blending syllables, identifying initial and final sounds, and using manipulatives to segment words.
Kindergarten students will be asked to demonstrate the following writing elements: writing upper and lowercase letters, distinguishing between upper and lowercase letters, using capital letters for important words, attempting simple sentences, and consistently writing from left to right and top to bottom. Students will also be asked to show a clear understanding between pictures and text, participate in group discussions that identify the characters and setting, and participate in written communication.
